Maximize Your Greenhouse Space
Having a greenhouse gives you the opportunity to grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers. However, without the right organization and maintenance, your greenhouse can quickly become cluttered and difficult to use. Maintaining your greenhouse’s interior, like keeping it organized, clean, and inviting, is just as important as choosing your greenhouse style. Keep reading for the best practices to keep your surfaces clean and protected, and to decorate a comfortable place to spend your time.
Where Should You Place Tools and Equipment?
Knowing where to place your gardening equipment once you start utilizing your greenhouse is a challenge that many face, especially first-time gardeners. For items that will be used every day, it’s best to keep them close to the door or potting benches, so all your frequently used items are within arm’s reach. Hand tools are best kept hanging, like on peg hooks or a wall rack. Keeping your tools in one designated space makes them easier to grab and helps prevent clutter.

Heavy items, such as soil bags, pots, hay, or fertilizer, should be kept low to the ground for easy lifting and away from main walking paths to reduce tripping hazards. Store the soil bag inside a pot, so the moisture from the soil doesn’t leak onto the floor. If soil bags are left on a wood floor for too long, they can cause staining or rot over time. If you have a gravel or brick floor, soil bags can be kept right on the ground. Another option that offers a cleaner, more organized space is to keep your soil in a closed container or bin. This makes for easy scooping, accessibility, and keeps the wet bag off the floor.
Organizing Your Space

Creating specific zones in your greenhouse helps maximize space, reduce clutter, and make the entire area feel more intentional. Consider having one area for potting and transplanting. Keep your hand tools above this space, as mentioned previously, so you have easy access to them when working with your plants. Another zone can be for growing and displaying. Use the area of the greenhouse that faces the sun, or the side that faces your house, so you can look out the back door and see your blooming plants through the greenhouse windows.
Organize another area for storage. As you can see in the image above, this gardener has their storage in brown wicker units. This frees up valuable greenhouse space and keeps less frequently used items from cluttering your gardening areas. You can even have a decoration zone, unless you’d rather decorate throughout the entire greenhouse. Remember to keep these decorations away from storage areas, so they don’t accidentally get pushed into the storage zone. Zoning helps your greenhouse feel larger since every area will have a purpose and be organized in its own designated spot.
Spruce It Up

Now for the fun part! Decorating your space can be as simple as adding a work area with a plant planner and chair. For those who really want to elevate their space, consider a rug, decorative baskets, and plant trays. These items add charm while also serving a practical purpose. The rug can help keep some dirt off your floors and is easy to vacuum or shake out. Baskets and trays can be used to move plants around the workspace or used as storage units. Consider grouping plants by color, height, or type to create a more curated look. For example, you could group tomatoes, red bell peppers, and strawberries by color, or separate vegetables, fruits, and herbs into their own categories.
You can also upgrade your greenhouse with an additional workbench or potting shelf to create more room for plants or décor. Include a few decorative signs around your greenhouse, lanterns, or an antique watering can. Lighting is another great option to add some flair to your greenhouse. Not only does this make your greenhouse look gorgeous at night, but it also allows you to garden when the sun has set. This lit space at night looks and feels inviting and will provide a calm and relaxing setting for you to tend to your plants.

Greenhouse Interior Inspiration
Several of our clients have organized their greenhouses to fit their exact needs. In the greenhouse below, the client uses buckets instead of traditional pots and takes advantage of the ceiling framing for hanging plants. They placed taller plants in buckets on the ground, so they had plenty of room to grow. Smaller flowers are placed on workbenches above the potting areas to create more space. They even decorated the exterior with a few potted plants and extended the gravel flooring outside the greenhouse to create an inviting walk path.

A clean greenhouse always looks better. If you have a flat ground surface, like brick, stone, or wood, make sure to regularly sweep the floor and wipe down the potting buckets. If you have a gravel floor, consider opening the door to the greenhouse and using a leaf blower to push the dirt and debris outside. Empty unused pots frequently, toss dead leaves, and clean the windows and benches. Establishing a cleaning routine and maintaining a neat greenhouse makes the entire space feel brighter and gives you a fresh area to work.
