Custom or Lot Model: What’s Better?

Choosing between a custom structure and one that is already assembled may sound like an easy choice, but when you really consider all the facts, the decision may be more complicated. Whether you need a structure quickly or are looking for a straightforward buying process, a model that is already built on our lot may be a better option for your property. However, if you’d like to make custom upgrades or have more control over the options, design, and size, then a custom model may be a great addition to your space. Either option can add useful, functional space to your property; keep reading to compare custom and lot models, understand the key considerations, and determine which option may work best for you.

The Difference Between Custom and Lot Models

A lot model, also known as a stock model, is a structure that is already fully built and displayed on our sales lot. These models are in-stock structures with the size, siding, colors, doors, windows, and other options already selected. What is great about these models is that you can see the finished structure before you buy it. You may even find a model that has some of the options and upgrades you were looking for, making the decision-making process easy. These stock items are typically priced lower than a comparable custom build. It’s not just basic sheds and garages; we have some very beautiful and unique structures on our lot as well. You can come check out some of these structures at any time at our three locations: Atglen, PA; Parkesburg, PA; and Mooresville, NC.

A custom model is built to order based on your choice of size, style, siding, colors, roof, doors, windows, interior space, and more. These projects often cost more than a lot model, depending largely on the model, options, and upgrades selected. A custom structure may seem overwhelming at first, with all the available options, but our team will walk you through the entire process. They can even provide sample images, similar projects we have done for previous clients, and suggestions to make your structure perfect.

Consider Your Timeline

When considering a lot or custom model, the biggest question should be “when do I need this?” If you want this structure to be on your property and ready to use as soon as possible, then a lot model is most often the best way to go, since it is already built and ready to be delivered. However, if you are looking for a structure but don’t need it right away, then a custom model may be the better route, as it leaves you time for customizations, building, and delivery.

Think about Property Access

Your property layout and site access are also important considerations, since they affect whether our team can safely deliver your structure. If your delivery location doesn’t meet the parameters or clearances our crew needs for a safe delivery, then building on site may be considered, which could classify it as a custom project.

How Much Customization Do You Want?

Finally, when considering a lot vs. custom model, consider customization and overall appearance. For example, if all you are looking for is a small shed with a similar color to your home, then a lot model may be a great fit. However, if you are looking to upgrade doors and windows, match an exact color, and add a few interior options, then your available lot models may become more limited. This is where a custom model may be the better fit, since you can personalize the structure to fit your specific preferences, property, and home.

How Does This Affect Delivery and Logistics?

The delivery process will be the same for both custom and lot models, unless your custom structure is being built on site. If your custom model is being built on site, then a crew will bring all the supplies and materials needed to your property and start building. This is common for two-story garages and properties that have limited access to their desired structure location. Permit requirements vary depending on your structure and local regulations, so be sure to check with your local municipality before ordering.

What Can You Customize?

With a custom model, there is a wide range of options and upgrades that you can choose from to make your dream structure. See our options HERE. Consider using our 3D Builder to visualize your design before ordering. Once you submit your 3D structure, the Stoltzfus Structures team will reach out with your submitted design and share additional options, explain our buying process, and answer any questions you may have.
